The former Arsenal and Crystal Palace defender has been in hospital for five weeks after a violent assault last month.

His brother and three children have been at Sansom’s bedside virtually ever since as he tries to recover.

But yesterday a source close to footballer said he was likely to need a lot of support if he was to overcome this battle.

They said: “With all the money flying around the game, Kenny’s family are hoping that the sport will support him and help him to get back on his feet.

“They know that nobody owes Kenny anything but he really is going to need all the help he can get.”

Police are probing the attack in Exeter but it’s understood the investigation has been halted as officers need to talk to Sansom.

The source added: “The concern among Kenny’s family and friends is that if he comes through this, which they are praying that he will, is that he may be left with long term health problems to overcome.

“The injuries he has suffered are very severe and he will need a lot of care and support to get over them

“Plus Kenny’s problems in recent years have been well documented. He’s fought a battle with alcohol and this is a demon he still fully needs to kick.

“He’s had to sofa surf for several years because he has basically been broke.”
