Jose Luis Capon dead at 72: Atletico Madrid legend passes away 24 hours after 14-year-old youth team star


ATLETICO MADRID legend Jose Luis Capon has died, aged 72.

The tragic news of his death comes just 24 hours after Atletico youth star Christian Minchola, 14, passed away.

Atletico Madrid have paid tribute to the former defender – who played for them from 1970 until 1980.

Alongside a picture of him, the club wrote: “Jose Luis Capon, one of our great legends, has passed away.

“You will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace.”

Real Madrid tweeted: “Real Madrid are deeply saddened by the passing of @Atleti legend Jose Luis Capon.

“All of our courage and support go out to his family and friends, his club and all of the Atletico Madrid supporters.”

The cause of Capon’s death has not been confirmed by Atletico Madrid.

During his time with Atletico, Capon won the Spanish League in 1973 and 1977, the Intercontinental Cup in 1974 and the Copa del Rey in 1976.

Across nine seasons with the Spanish side, the defender made 269 appearances for the club across all competitions.

He made 13 appearances and scored one goal for Spain’s national team.

Fans have flocked to Twitter to pay tribute to the legendary defender – who left Atletico to join Elche in  1980.

One supporter said: “Our red and white family is in mourning – again. One of the great legends has passed away: Jose Luis Capon. You always be in our hearts. Rest in peace.”

Another added: “We just found out more sad news, another legend that is leaving us.”

Atletico have also been mourning the loss of talented youth star Minchola this week.

The cause of the young striker’s death remains unknown.
