Wilshere, 28, has made SIXTEEN appearances for the Hammers since joining them from Arsenal — where he snubbed a deal — in the summer of 2018.

He has not played since October because of a groin problem and his whole career has been hampered by a succession of injuries.

The midfielder, who signed a three-year deal at the Hammers as a free agent said: “It hasn’t worked out for me, I’ll be honest.

“It hasn’t gone the way I wanted it to. I’ve missed too much football, I haven’t played enough games.

“I want to get my career back on track, get playing games week in, week out and start to feel like a footballer again.”

Wilshere was hailed as the new Gazza when he burst on to the scene with the Gunners aged just 16 and was tipped to be the future kingpin of England’s midfield.

But injuries have wrecked his career, restricting him to just 34 caps for his country.

Mikel Arteta believes Wilshere could have been of the world’s best if not for injuries

Wilshere, who was seen on social media last week nutmegging his wife in a rare piece of action, told Stadium Astro: “The last couple of years have been  frustrating.

“I enjoyed my time at Arsenal and I went to Bournemouth, had a good year but picked up another injury.

“I came back, was told I could leave but I managed to stay and fight my way back into the team and had a good year.

“Then I made the decision to leave Arsenal and join West Ham.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, a  former team-mate of Wilshere’s, recently spoke of his sadness at the way the star’s career has gone.

The 38-year-old Spaniard — who has just recovered from Covid-19 — said: “It’s very sad with Jack. He could have been phenomenal.

“When I watched him every day in training, you would say he could be one of the best midfielders.

“He always had something, then he is starting to build again a career and then again another injury, again another setback and it was disappointing.

“I was very impressed with how strong he was mentally to deal with the situation, because he had a lot of pressure from the media because the expectations for him were big.”
