It would be ‘unfair on Liverpool’ if Premier League season was ended due to coronavirus, insists PFA chief Gordon Taylor

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor insists it would be “unfair on Liverpool” if the Premier League season was ended amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Football across Europe has been suspended as COVID-19 sweeps the globe, with over 7,000 deaths worldwide and Italy, Spain and France currently in lockdown.

Premier League bosses are due to meet on Thursday to decide a plan going ahead having postponed fixtures until April 3.

A decision will have to be made on whether the campaign will be cut early or resumed at a later date.

But with the virus spreading at a rapid rate it is unclear when or if football can get back underway.

Should the season be scrapped it will have to be decided whether Liverpool – who are 25 points clear at the top – will be handed the trophy early.

But Taylor believes it will “devalue” their first title in 30 years and claims ending the season now will leave “unfinished business” for all 20 teams.

He said: “I think it would be unfair, not least of course on Liverpool. But all clubs who are doing well, they would be accused of, ‘oh well you don’t know if you would have won it or not’.

“It would devalue it and I think those clubs that have done well and are at the top deserve to be there.

“And those clubs who are at the bottom deserve to be given the chance to get out of trouble, because that’s how the game’s always worked and that’s how the competition was at the beginning.

“So I think we should do all we can. I think it would seem really weird if we started a new season.

“It would be unfinished business behind us and I don’t think that would look good.”

Taylor reckons the season should run into the summer months, pushing Euro 2020 back a year, to ensure the current campaign finishes on time for the next to get underway.

With European football’s governing bodies due to hold crisis talks today to decide the fate of the Euros, he explained: “I think it’s inevitable that club football will have to take precedence over international tournaments and international games.

“I would expect the Euros to be put back, probably for a year. I would hope the season could be extended and we’re flexible enough to deal with that.”
