Ian Wright says Mustafi is simply ‘not good enough’ for Arsenal despite apology to fans after Chelsea howler

IAN WRIGHT launched a fresh criticism of Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi after last night’s horror show against Chelsea by saying he is “not good enough” for the side.

Haphazard Mustafi, making just his fourth Premier League start of the season, let Tammy Abraham through after a shocking back-pass that led to the Blues’ first last night.

David Luiz downed Abraham in the box and Jorginho converted the penalty before the Gunners eventually fought back for a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

But Mustafi’s moment of madness was enough to convince Arsenal legend Wright that the German simply cannot perform at a high enough level for the club.

And even Mustafi’s apology to fans at full-time – where he was the first to go over and applaud them – was not enough to change Wright’s mind.

The ex-England hero said: “We saw his heartfelt message to fans, the problem is he’s not good enough.

“He’s had multiple chances at Arsenal and he continues to let them down.

“I’m not digging him out or anything. He is not good enough.

“They are playing him because they’ve got no choice and that’s unfortunately why Arsenal can’t get rid of him.”

Fellow pundit Andy Townsend added: “Mustafi’s mistake is awful because it gives Tammy Abraham the chance to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

“He’s just not good enough. He’s going to make mistakes all the time.”

Wright has been a consistent critic of Mustafi and last month urged Mikel Arteta to sell the 27-year-old.

If the Gunners allow the much-maligned German to see out the rest of his £80,000-a-week contract, they will have shelled out almost £60million in transfer fees and wages on the defender alone.

He stands to rake in another £8.3million in wages if Arsenal fail to shift him on in the upcoming transfer windows.

SunSport columnist Wright previously said of Mustafi: “There’s nothing you can do to coach a defender of his experience now.

“Those are the types of players Arteta’s got to be looking to get rid of.”
