Huw Jenkins confirms £1million Charlton takeover bid with cash-strapped club facing wage and tax bill

HUW JENKINS has confirmed he is keen to buy Charlton Athletic in a £1million takeover deal.

However the former Swansea City owner revealed his period of exclusivity has expired – and he is relying on owner Tahnoon Nimer selling to him.

The drama stepped up after SunSport revealed Jenkins was close to seizing control as rival bidder Laurence Bassini claimed he still wants the club.

Charlton need the agreement sorted quickly as they are due to pay wages at the end of the month and also have a tax bill to settle.

Jenkins said: “Charlton have a number of things attached to the club with the current owners, past directors and past owner.

“All of those still have a link to the club and cause a lot of uncertainty. I was fully aware there were big challenges to try to correct all of that.

“Those three or four different things that could potentially impact on the field it can be a big hindrance.

“The quicker those are resolved under one leadership then that will be a good thing for the future.”

Sources close to Jenkins claim he wants to do the deal but is keen to have all disputes – involving Nimer and ex-ally Matt Southall – settled completely.

Bassini has also been trying for the club and would also have to prove he has funds to pay the wages and tax before he could fully seal a deal.

Southall and Bassini were part of a takeover bid at Bolton a year ago before the former agent walked away and left colourful ex-Watford chief on his own.
