Forget Leroy Sane comparisons — Ferran Torres is Man City’s top scorer this season

It was never going to be easy for Ferran Torres (£3.0m).

The 20-year-old joined Man City a month after Leroy Sane officially joined Bayern Munich in the summer.

For all the German’s backstage frictions, Sane was an electric performer for Pep Guardiola’s side and a key contributor to the club’s domestic dominance from 2017 to 2019.

Since he was seemingly signed as a direct replacement, comparisons between Torres and Sane were inevitable, even though the Spaniard would probably not encourage such behaviour.

Impressive numbers

And while it’s probably fair to suggest the Spaniard has not caught the eye in the same way Sane did at his best, Torres has performed impressively in front of goal, where it really counts.

At this stage of the season, the ex-Valencia winger is City’s joint-top scorer in all competitions.

His tally of seven is equalled by Raheem Sterling (£6.9m) who has played considerably more minutes.

In fact, Torres is on course to match Sane’s best ever season for City in terms of goals (16).

While just two of his goals have come in the league, the latest coming against Newcastle on Boxing Day, he has thoroughly enjoyed himself in the Champions League with four goals this campaign — the same as Cristiano Ronaldo.

Not bad for a 20-year-old in his first season at a new club

Naturally, his exploits have translated to notable Dream Team returns.

Only six midfielders have scored more points than Torres’ 64 at this stage and two of those individuals are his team-mates: Phil Foden (£4.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£6.4m).

Torres currently appears in 8.3% of teams, which is a relatively big ownership for a perceived second-string player.

Of course, there are other factors to consider when mulling over his Dream Team worth.

It remains to be seen how the outbreak of Covid-19 at the club will affect imminent fixtures after the postponement of City’s trip to Goodison Park on Monday.

It is not yet known whether or not Torres is one of the players now isolating and there is guarantee when he will next be in action either way.
