But after Thursday’s Cobra meeting, EFL bosses claim there is “no medical rationale” behind suspending matches.
A statement read: “In light of today’s announcement by the UK government, EFL matches will continue to take place as normal while the guidance from the relevant authorities remains that there is no medical rationale to close or cancel sporting events.
“The EFL, however, will continue to work with the government and relevant stakeholders to further develop contingency plans to ensure the league is best placed to act as and when any potential restrictions may come into force.”
While may leagues have cancelled matches altogether in recent days, some are opting to play games behind closed doors.
But for now all English football is set to be played in front of packed crowds, despite coronavirus spreading at a worrying rate.
On Thursday, Leicester revealed three players had exhibited symptoms of the bug, while three other unnamed Premier League players were set to be tested.
Chelsea cancelled training after someone close to the squad appeared to have a dry cough and fever – the two main symptoms of coronavirus.
On Wednesday night, Juventus were plunged into the crisis after Daniele Rugani tested positive for coronavirus.
Team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has now reportedly told the club he “won’t return” as he self-isolates on his home island of Madeira.
Former Southampton star Manolo Gabbiadini – now at Sampdoria in locked-down Italy – has also tested positive.
Elsewhere, a host of Champions League and Europa ties played this week – and due to be played next week – will go ahead behind closed doors, as things stand.
But Uefa are discussing suspending all competition until further notice – with Euro 2020 potentially being delayed by a YEAR.
Spain’s top-flight, LaLiga, have already suspended all matches for at least two weeks after Real Madrid were put on lockdown after a member of their basketball affiliates showed signs of the virus.
The MLS also revealed all football would be suspended – just days before David Beckham’s Inter Miami home opener.
