SKY SPORTS’ fake crowd noise got a mixed reception from fans tuning into the Premier League restart.
One said the fake atmosphere played through TV speakers was worse than the ear-splitting vuvuzelas heard during the 2010 World Cup.

And goal celebration sounds being played for saves left many bemused on social media.
Others reckoned the cheers that coincided with a period of action in the clash between Aston Villa and Sheffield United made the spectacle better.
Borussia Dortmund were among the sides to have fake noise played in their games on the Bundesliga’s return from the coronavirus pandemic.
But some fans there chose to mute the TV because the sounds were “too weird”.
Sky Sports Main Event viewers were played the sounds while those watching on Sky Sports Premier League were not.
MIXED RECEPTION
And judging by social media, it seemed those who preferred the actual noise from the game – instructions from coaches and shouts from players – were in the majority.
One user fumed: “There’s no way I can listen to that crowd noise. Utter joke. From a nerdy perspective, I like listening to the chatter on the pitch.”
Another said: “Have to say it’s Bundesliga 1, Premier League 0 on fake crowd noise.
“It was white noise on the Bundesliga, with the odd rise and fall, but trying to make it react to every incident feels like too much.”
One comment read: “I did sit here thinking ‘footballs gonna be weird with no crowd noise’ forgetting that I play Sunday League and watch lots of non-league where the crowds barely reach 30 people.”
SOUND CONFUSION
A fellow user wrote: “I wasn’t that keen on fake crowd noise when it was first suggested and some of it isn’t in sync, but I prefer this to near silence.
“Still has the feel of an event coming off the TV.”
Another posted: “Is anyone else just hanging on to find out what the fake crowd noise is like when/if there’s a goal!?”
One comment read: “Maybe someone in the artificial crowd can make their way on to the pitch and score a f***ing goal or something.”
One thing that left viewers puzzled were the cheering sounds celebrating a goal when there wasn’t one.
Cheers rang out in the first half when goalkeeper Stephen Henderson saved a Villa effort.
And the same thing happened when United were robbed of a goal after goal-line technology “stopped working”.
And in the second half Enda Stevens fizzed in an effort into the side-netting with cheering blazing out for those watching on TV.
