Tributes have flooded in from around the world for ‘Hand of God’ national icon Maradona.

But controversial Liverpool flop Diouf instead hijacked the occasion to big himself up.

Diouf, 39, claimed Maradona’s support led to him being named one of the 20th century’s 100 best players.

The pair later met at a charity match in Morocco in 2016.

Diouf said: “The prophet of football has left us in Diego Maradona. He rated me a great deal.

“When he saw me play, I’ve no idea how he got my phone number, but he rang to congratulate and encourage me.

“The fact that I am one of the 100 best players of the 20th century is thanks to him.

“He fought for this to happen, despite not being African himself.

“It was because he knew how to recognise and and appreciate another person’s ability.”

The Senegal World Cup star is still hated on Merseyside following long-running feuds with several Kop legends.

Diouf also played for Bolton, Sunderland, Blackburn, Rangers, Doncaster and Leeds.

He added: “Today the entire world has suffered a loss. Diego made the whole world happy, and embodied respect.

“Besides, he was a true patriot.”
