Everton line up transfer swoop for Wigan’s ‘next Wayne Rooney’ Joe Gelhardt

EVERTON want to sign Wigan striker Joe Gelhardt — the kid dubbed the new Wayne Rooney.

Gelhardt has been causing a scramble for his signature with his form for the Latics youth team and eye- catching cameos in the senior side.

And Goodison Park transfer supremo Marcel Brandts is desperate to sign the young forward with the power and threat of Rooney.

The Liverpudlian, 17, is already in the England Under-18 side and rated the best kid Wigan have ever found.

However, despite calls from the fans he has not had much chance to shine in Paul Cook’s first team because of their troubles in the Championship.

Gelhardt still managed a debut goal against Hull in September and confirmed the quality that Chelsea first spotted in him two seasons ago when they took an interest — as we first revealed.

YOUTH CUP HEROES

But now Everton are deadly serious and Wigan face a fight to keep their starlet in the summer.

The Latics are in the last eight of the FA Youth Cup for the first time and other talents like Jensen Weir, Kyle Joseph and Adam Devine have drawn admiring looks from the top scouts.

Meanwhile, the Toffees have also been linked with Sporting Lisbon’s ex-Liverpool winger Rafa Camacho.

Football Insider say the 19-year-old’s admirers also include Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Camacho turned down a new Liverpool deal last summer but has so far made only four league starts in Portugal.
