England keeping tabs on Giovanni Reyna as 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund star was born in Sunderland

BORUSSIA DORTMUND’S 17-year-old sensation Giovanni Reyna is on England’s radar – as the USA youth star was born in Sunderland.

The attacking midfielder, son of ex-Black Cats star Claudio Reyna, has played eight games in a row for the Bundesliga title challengers.

Even more impressively, he teed up two-goal Erling Haaland’s clincher in last Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League last-16 first-leg win over PSG.

Portugal and Argentina are also eyeing Reyna due to his grandparents.

And the Mirror say Reyna is on a list of around 1,000 England possibles selected by Gareth Southgate’s Player Insights team at St George’s Park.

The team sends scouts to watch the starlets, as well as studying hours of footage.

So far Reyna’s dad remains better known in Britain – but probably not for long.

Reyna Sr won 112 caps as a USA midfielder, also playing for Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg on loan, Rangers, Manchester City and the New York Red Bulls.

Giovanni was born in the middle of his father’s two-year spell at Sunderland.

And although he was with New York City from the age of 12 to 15, he soon attracted the attention of leading European clubs as he was already starring for NYC’s under-18 development academy.

Dortmund won the race to sign him, helped by having one of the most famous academies in world football.
