He has since spent large periods of time in Togo after coronavirus halted the South Americans’ season.
Olimpia have now scrapped the 36-year-old’s contract in the face of his Covid 19-related problems returning to Asuncion.
The capital city club said in a statement: “The contract with the Togolese player Emmanuel Adebayor has been cancelled by mutual consent.
“This situation has come about because of the difficulties the player would have in returning to Paraguay.
“He would need to take multiple flights, and they could place his health at risk.
“We thank Emmanuel Adebayor for his professionalism, and we wish him success in the future.”
Togo international Adebayor could now retire after playing for ten clubs.
He shone for Metz and Monaco before joining Arsenal in 2005, and has also had spells with Real Madrid and Crystal Palace.
The France-born striker had stints with Turkish sides Basaksehir and Kayserispor before joining Olimpia.
