Edinson Cavani ‘agrees Benfica transfer’ with final details to be ironed out in huge blow to Leeds

EDINSON CAVANI has agreed a move to Benfica, according to reports.

Leeds have targeted the Paris Saint-Germain and Uruguay striker as the man who can kick-start their return to life in the Premier League.

But the transfer now looks a no-go according to website Todo Fichajes.

They claim Cavani has “accepted the proposal” of the Lisbon team and now just a few minor details need ironing out.

It is believed the 33-year-old former Napoli frontman is on the brink of agreeing a two-year deal.

The move to the Portuguese side, currently second in the league, could be made official on Wednesday.

Leeds have also been linked to Zlatan Ibrahimovic but Cavani always looked the more likely option.

Cavani’s half-brother and agent Walter Guglielmone is said to have been holding talks with Benfica.

Uruguayan journalist Sebas Giovanelli described the first meeting as ending very positively with a second round of talks already underway.

Benfica club president Luis Filipe Vieira has reportedly been present at the negotiations with the player’s representative, before the addition of various directors.

Offering Cavani Champions League football – like Benfica can do – probably swayed his decision.

Since earning promotion earlier in the month, the Yorkshire side were thought to have held their own talks with Guglielmone.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani admitted a deal for Ibrahimovic would be “difficult” but was more optimistic that Cavani could be tempted.

The Italian told Sky Sports Italia: “In addition to his quality, Cavani could contribute with his physicality and adapt here, but I’ve never talked about him with the coach.

“Having said that, we’ve certainly thought about him and we’ll see, given he’s still available on a free transfer.”
