But how did the players get on? SunSport’s Simon Phillips takes a look…
EDOUARD MENDY – 7/10
Very much a spectator tonight for Chelsea, save for dealing with a few crosses.
The keeper, playing against his former club, was calm on the ball and good at organising his defence once again.
REECE JAMES – 8
He just gets better game after game.
James was up and down the right-hand flank once again, delivering dangerous crosses in attack like the one setting up Tammy Abraham to score, while remaining solid at the back.
KURT ZOUMA – 8
Another solid defensive performance from Zouma.
He didn’t have a lot to do, but he swept up anything dangerous that came his way.
THIAGO SILVA – 9
The veteran defender, 36, was pinging passes around in his sleep and played some excellent long-range balls.
Silva brings so much calmness and security to the Chelsea backline it’s no wonder he started again.
A flawless performance from Silva and he got his deserved rest on 68 minutes. Man of the Match.
BEN CHILWELL – 8
His energy is unreal, playing as a left winger one minute, then a left back the next.
Chilwell had another classy game for Chelsea tonight and he was great at bolstering the numbers in attack in the hour that he played.
N’GOLO KANTE – 8
Kante played a more box-to-box role and enjoyed that freedom to roam.
He got in some good advanced positions and was a nuisance for Rennes.
Booked in the first half for kicking the ball away, which was rather silly and was wisely removed for Kovacic on 61 minutes.
JORGINHO – 7
Jorginho did his job in midfield but was under no pressure at all after Rennes had a player sent-off.
He showed off his range of passing while helping control the play in the second half for Chelsea.
MASON MOUNT – 7
Mount was being relied on as Chelsea’s creator in the middle tonight in the absence of Kai Havertz and he did show signs of threatening.
But it is Mount’s pressing, energy, and organisation of the press that makes him stand out for Lampard.

HAKIM ZIYECH – 6
His touch was sublime, but he didn’t really find his passing and didn’t quite look as lively as he did at the weekend.
Had a good chance to score in the second half, but missed it.
TAMMY ABRAHAM – 7
He was rather missing up top for Chelsea in the first half and failed to win much in the air.
He came alive a bit more in the second half and got on the end of a James cross to score Chelsea’s third goal. Subbed off shortly after.
TIMO WERNER – 8
He did well to score two penalties – even winning the first one – and he looked very lively on the wing all night.
Rennes did well to double up on him but Werner was a real threat in attack for Chelsea.
