NEWCASTLE UNITED are interested in Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso, according to reports.
Alonso faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge with the Blues linked with a move for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.
And the Magpies’ potential new Saudi owners could make their first splash in the transfer market with a move for the 29-year-old.
The Mirror claims discussions have taken place with the Chelsea hierarchy to make their interest in Alonso known.
Chelsea would demand a fee of around £26million for the Spanish international, who has three years left on his contract.
Alonso will be familiar with the North East, having spent time on loan at Sunderland in 2014.
He was booed by the Toon fans in October as he scored the only goal in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Newcastle at the Bridge.
Alonso has four goals in 11 Premier League appearances this season, but has not featured as a regular under Blues boss Frank Lampard.
The former Bolton defender has had to compete with Emerson Palmieri and more recently captain Cesar Azpilicueta for a spot at left-back.
Both Alonso and Emerson have been linked with moves away from Chelsea, with the left side of defence clearly identified as an area for improvement by manager Lampard.
Last week Alonso was found to have liked a tweet criticising Chelsea’s pursuit of England international Chilwell.
As well as the Leicester man, the Blues have been linked with moves for Porto’s Alex Telles and Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico,
Alonso joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in 2016 and has won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League during his time at the club.
