Waldschmidt, 23, has won two senior caps following his sensational performance in last year’s European Under-21 Championship in Italy, where he banged in seven goals in four games.

The locals were so impressed with the starlet they named him ‘Il Bomber’ in a nod to West Germany’s legend Gerd Muller, who was known as ‘Der Bomber’.

Lampard, 41, has been on Waldschmidt’s trail since and wants to bring him to the Premier League.

He may face competition from rivals and Freiburg may try to spark an auction.

Chelsea think Waldschmidt can improve and that he will develop when he learns to use his physique.

Lamps wants to sell Belgium forward Michy Batshuayi, 26, this summer.

He is short in central attack and keen to bring in a couple of players.

Experienced Frenchman Olivier Giroud pushed for a move away from Stamford Bridge in January, but was unable to force a transfer.

Giroud was then brought back into the squad following an injury to Tammy Abraham, with the World Cup winner making six appearances before the season was halted amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea could lose the ex-Arsenal striker for nothing, with the 33-year-old yet to open talks to extend his contract.
