Cardiff fans told to halt ‘racist or homophobic chants’ at Reading reply ‘racist b*****ds, we know what we are’

CARDIFF supporters told to halt “racist or homophobic chanting” during their FA Cup game at Reading replied with the alarming call of “racist b*****ds, we know what we are”.

Saturday’s fourth round meeting between the Championship sides was not stopped during the first-half but a stadium announcement called for chants to end.

The exact nature of the chants are unclear at this stage but the Madejski Stadium announcer stated “racist or homophobic chanting from the away fans must cease immediately”.

It follows a plea to stop homophobic chanting being made against Millwall fans during their meeting with Reading last weekend.

However Cardiff supporters responded with a shameful chant appearing to revel in the telling off.

A portion of the visiting faithful sang “racist b*****ds, we know what we are” immediately after the announcement.

During the game, both sets of fans participated in the sort of Welsh-English chants that are commonplace in such fixtures and there is no word as yet that these were responsible for the call to halt abuse.

Racist abuse has been a worrying theme throughout football this season, with Millwall promising that a “comprehensive investigation is under way” after last week’s incident.

The Manchester derby, England’s trips to Bulgaria and Montenegro, and the FA Cup clash between non-league Haringey and Yeovil have all been marred by abusive episodes in recent months – outlining the breadth of the issue.

As a result, the Professional Footballers’ Association last month called for a government inquiry into the matter.
