A reported £100,00-a-week will be taken home by Fernandes, 25, potentially forming part of a cut-price midfield.
Injured star Scott McTominay banks only ten per cent of that amount while Andreas Pereira is on £30,000-a-week.
Contrast that to the exorbitant figures earned by United’s veterans and it is not hard to see why that cannot shift them.
Nemanja Matic earns £120,000-a-week, lagging behind Juan Mata’s £160,000-a-week pay packet and level with Brazilian flop Fred.
Defenders Ashley Young is on the same wage bracket, clocking in at £6.2million over the course of a year which Luke Shaw strolls clear of with £150,000-a-week making for £7.8m in 12 months.
By far the highest earner still at the club is David De Gea, last year agreeing a deal to be paid £350,000-a-week – matching the now on-loan Alexis Sanchez.
Fernandes is expected to arrive at Old Trafford after making a farewell appearance for Sporting in Friday’s derby with Benfica.
Signing from Sampdoria in 2017, the Portuguese ace leaves Primeira Liga with a record of 63 goals and 51 assists.
Such a tally should excite fans with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struggling to generate chances through the middle of the pitch on a regular basis.
