And he appeared surprised when finding out the news in the pre-match press conference next to his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Fernandes said: “I was not expecting this, for me it’s an honour to be captain of Manchester United.
“It is an important achievement for me but I think everyone is the captain, everyone needs to help and be a leader in their own way, leadership is different in every player.
“The game will not be about me but the team but leading is every day on the training ground, every game and everyone is doing their job to lead the team in the way they think is best.”
The midfielder has been the most vocal player at the club since the day he arrived and will feel even more empowered as captain.
Fernandes was even filmed having a go at Alex Telles during a game of keep ball in a light training session before the squad flew off to Paris.
His demands are high and even Roy Keane would approve.
Fernandes will not be tamed either because he says it is just how he is made.
He added: “I think I grew up like this. It’s the way I have to be in life and in football too. It’s my character.
“Sometimes it’s too much and sometimes other players are less. I think I can help the team with the way I am.
“All the players are driven and you need all of the different characters in the team to complete a very good team.
“I think it’s important, the way I am, to complete the others, and it’s important the qualities the others have, to complete me.”
