Two years blighted by injuries had put a string of Premier League clubs off offering the England striker a deal because he could not be trusted to stay fit.

But Villa boss Dean Smith is desperate to add some firepower to his squad as they look to climb away from relegation trouble in the table.

And his need for new attacking options has been increased by the knee injury suffered by Wesley which threatens to rule him out for a long time.

The Brazilian is feared to have damaged his anterior cruciate ligament during the crucial 2-1 victory over Burnley which has breathed life into their battle to avoid the drop.

If those initial fears are confirmed it will leave Smith needing to act quickly to bring in at least one new forward for the remainder of the campaign.

According to the Mail, one option appears to be Sturridge, 30, who has been impressing in Turkey having overcome the injuries to his ankle which blighted his early season.

The striker scored twice in last week’s 6-2 win over Kayerispor, taking him to four goals in six starts for the club.

And his all-round play has shown signs that he is back to his full sharpness, and has sparked the interest of Villa once more.

The Midlands club actually looked at bringing Sturridge to Villa Park over the summer as they were preparing for their return to the top flight.

They decided against following through with an offer at the time in favour of signing Wesley, but there is a feeling they could do with his quality in the squad for the second half of the season.

Smith has other targets in mind but is insure if he will be able to get any of his preferred options in this month.

Kelechi Iheanacho is starting to be involved more at Leicester and is not keen on leaving, while Hull’s Jarrod Bowen and Fulham’s Alexandar Mitrovic may be out of their price range.
