Aston Villa and Newcastle set for January transfer battle over £25m AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek

ASTON VILLA and Newcastle are to face off in their search for a new striker with AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek a target for both.

Steve Bruce’s Magpies were going well until late December but a run of one win in six underlines their need for January additions.

Record signing Joelinton continues to struggle in the lone striker role, leaving Newcastle among the Premier League’s lowest scorers.

Meanwhile, Villa were left short up front by Wesley’s serious knee injury suffered over the Christmas period.

According to Sky Sports Italia, the Midlands side have identified Piatek as a genuine possibility this month.

Monday reportedly saw sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch meet his Milan counterpart in Italy to discuss a deal.

It is said Villa are prepared to meet the Rossoneri’s £25million valuation of the 24-year-old Pole.

But Newcastle are also in the mix with SunSport understanding that Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival at the San Siro gives them hope with Piatek.

An initial loan move is preferred by the Tyneside team but they do have the cash to rival Villa’s bid.

And Piatek landing at St James’ Park would allow reserve forward Dwight Gayle a mid-season exit.

After signing from Genoa for £30m 12 months ago, Piatek initially hit the ground running with six goals in his first seven appearances.

This season has been far less productive however and West Ham have also been linked to a move during this transfer market.
