Tanak – the defending WRC champion – crashed midway through the fourth stage in Monte Carlo, tumbling down a steep verge.

Videos seem to show the Hyundai racer’s front-right wheel catch the edge of an icy patch of grass on the entry to a chicane.

The car bounces and struggles to stay on the road, before flying through the air and down the verge, leaving the car in an absolute wreck.

Both Tanak – who won the 2019 WRC with Toyota – and co-driver Martin Jarveoja are said to be fine.

However, they were sent to hospital to undergo precautionary examinations.

Tanak has, understandably, retired from the rest of the Rally Monte Carlo.

The Estonian has been on the podium for the last three editions, but will miss out in 2020.

At the end of stage four, Elfyn Evans (Toyota) leads by 3.4 seconds, ahead of Thierry Neuville (Hyundai).

Sebastien Ogier (Toyota) sits third, a further 2.1 seconds behind.

British star Gus Greensmith – a former Manchester City youth team goalkeeper – also had a day to forget in Monte Carlo.
