Horner said: “Max is the most in-form driver in F1.

“Lewis is the world champion, we will have to see who is best at the end of the year.

“If we can give Max the tools to get the job done, then he will deliver.”

Horner is adamant the Dutchman, 22, now has the experience, aggression and talent to beat Hamilton, who turned the championship into a one-horse race last year.

Ahead of this season’s opener at Melbourne on March 15, Horner said: “The only person I’ve seen Lewis make mistakes around is Max.

“Max is the coming man, he is in the ascendancy and Lewis is 35.

“It is not in Max’s DNA to settle for second place, he wants to go for it.”

Hamilton’s Mercedes contract ends in December and insiders think it will cost the German team £60million-a-year for him to sign a new deal.

Horner ruled out the Brit moving to Red Bull.

He said: “He would not fit into our programme.”
