The 29-year-old had been competing in the 600cc category when the fatal incident occurred.

Local media report that Munoz was in second position when she lost control of her motorcycle on a bend called “Zero Curve” which caused her to fall to the ground, before then being run over by her own bike.

The Dominican received immediate medical attention at the track and was transported to a local hospital, but passed away shortly after the accident.

Brazil’s Secretariat of Sports and Leisur issued a statement, saying that it: “Regrets the death of Indy Munoz, an experienced athlete in moto racing, as a result of an accident during the first stage of the Goias Superbikes.

“We reiterate that the race track has all of the documents updated and complies with all the safety rules set by organisations that manage motorcycle racing and all motor racing.

“The current management of SEEL is extremely vigilant on the quality of sporting arenas especially with regards to safety.”

The comments come after Brazilian motorcycle racer Welles Lins de Carvalho Balbino also died in hospital from injuries suffered during an accident on the same bend at just 31 in August last year.

Munoz was born in the Dominican Republic but spent her career as a professional motorcycle racer in Brazil.

She was crowned Brazil national champion in 2013 and 2014, the second triumph coming in the 1000cc category. Her other accolades include three Kawasaki Ninja 300 cups and a Yamaha R3 Cup.
