Formula E – Santiago ePrix: Jaguar’s Mitch Evans clinched pole as Felipe Massa registered SAME time as Pascal Wehrlein

But the ex-F1 duo were knocked down to fourth and third respectively – when BMW’s Max Gunther went faster by half a second.

Although Gunther will start second after Evans pipped him to pole in the final lap.

Evans, 25, said: “I just wanted to keep composed. But the car has been amazing since the first lap in practice.

“So to keep the car performing throughout the transition of day is just a testament to all the guys – who have been working super hard since Saudi.

“This feels really good.”

British Formula E title hopefuls Sam Bird and Alex Sims had a session to forget, as Bird starts 16th behind Sims in 15th.

Fellow Brit Oliver Turvey caused a huge shock as he dragged his underperforming NIO to fifth on the grid.

Barnsley-born Oliver Rowland shunted his Nissan hard into the concrete walls early on in the session as he starts 22nd on the grid.

Virgin’s Robin Frijns had a huge spin across the chicane but he spectacularly managed to control the car and narrowly avoided hitting the wall.
