NASCAR fans have witnessed the first post-pandemic tussle between drivers competing at the Xfinity Series.
Harrison Burton and Noah Gragson got into an ill-tempered spat on Friday after both drivers collided at the race in Kentucky.
Harrison Burton and Noah Gragson got into a scuffle after their cars made contact during a NASCAR race in Kentucky on Friday night
Gragson went on to whizz past Burton on the inside of the third and fourth turns and slid into his rival.
The manoeuvre cost both drivers their spots and led to a furious confrontation between the pair.
Gragson appeared to throw a punch after Burton shoved him during their tense conversation.
And Fox cameras picked up the row which included footage of the rivals appearing to wrestle each other to the floor.
After the scrap, Burton told Fox: “I had a lot of people come up to me afterwards saying that was a long time coming, so I guess that was a popular move.”
Gragson had very little to say after the incident and did not go into details of what occurred on the track and off it.
And it appears the driver was not wearing a mask despite NASCAR bosses sending reminders to teams to make sure their employees follow mask-wearing and social distancing rules.
Following the scuffle, Gragson said: “I don’t really have a comment, I really haven’t seen everything that happened.”
Earlier this year Gragson lost control of his car underneath a rival while racing for position in 2020.
With a similar manoeuvre, he took out team-mate Justin Allgaier at Bristol with Gragson going on to win that race.
