Brit Sam Bird says Sam Warburton is a ‘monster’ after training with Lions legend during Formula E break

SAM BIRD has kept himself in tip-top condition by training with Lions legend Sam Warburton during Formula E’s festive break.

Drivers have had to wait 56 days to get behind the wheel again since the opening weekend in Saudi Arabia.

Bird won the first of the two races in Saudi – becoming the only driver to have won a race in all six FE seasons.

The Brit trained hard over Christmas while on holiday in Dubai with his family and bumped into Warburton as they were staying at the same hotel.

The Virgin driver told SunSport: “I saw him and I knew who he was but he kept looking over at me as I was doing this ridiculous interval session on the treadmill.

“It looked like my legs were doing 1,000 rpm.

“So we got chatting and you know sportsman to sportsman, it was quite nice.

“He’s obviously been inspirational in terms of what he has been able to achieve in his career.

“The bloke, he’s a monster. He made me look so small.

“I didn’t see him lift any massive weights while I was there. But he is definitely a machine.”

BIRDS FLIGHT TO TITLE GLORY

Bird has adopted a new vegan diet for this season and feels in a better place physically and mentally as he eyes his first FE championship.

But rather than having his eye on the ultimate prize, Bird is fighting towards smaller targets which he hopes will lead him to winning the title.

He added: “I’m setting myself good, achievable goals – nothing that is unrealistic, something I can get to, accomplish and move onto the next thing.

“It’s just constant, little short term goals, instead of a big long term goal because it seems further away, it’s a little bit like a championship.

“You have these mini goals you want to accomplish with the big goal at the end of it – but in order to get the big goal, you have accomplish little things on the way.”
