Unified boxing champ Josh Taylor torn between Ben Davison and Adam Booth… but not ruling out sensational switch to US

BOXING world champ Josh Taylor says he is torn on who his next trainer will be after his bitter split from Shane McGuigan.

The unified lightweight king has spent time on the pads with Tyson Fury’s former coach Ben Davison and the highly-rated Adam Booth.

It comes following a shock split from coach Shane McGuigan and his dad Barry, who managed the Scot.

Taylor left Cyclone Promotions and agreed a multi-fight deal with Bob Arum’s Top Rank and will now be managed by MTK Global.

But it is selecting his lead coach that is proving the most problematic – and it could even see the 29-year-old move to the US.

Speaking at the MTK Academy Launch in London, Taylor said: “I am in the middle of sorting one out, I’m not rushing into a decision.

“I’m going to take my time. I’ve only been with two trainers, Ben Davison and Adam Booth, they are the only two coaches I have tried and they are both very, very good coaches.

“I’m not any closer to making that decision as they are both so good, I’m stuck in the middle.

“There are a couple in America I would like to try as well.

“It is not a decision I am going to rush into as it’s an important decision to make.”

Taylor admitted he is leaning towards staying in the UK, but there have been rumours he would be keen on a link-up with legendary trainer Freddie Roach Stateside.

He added: “I am open to anything that improves me as a fighter, to help improve my game, keep developing, learning and improving.

“I am used to be away from home anyway. I have never trained at home since I was 15 years old since Team Scotland.

“If I have got to go to America I have got to go to America.”

UNDISPUTED DREAM

Taylor most recently beat Regis ‘Rougarou’ Prograis to win the super-lightweight World Boxing Super Series in London.

It saw him crowned unified lightweight champ holding the WBA and IBF world titles with his dream of becoming undisputed champ the ultimate dream.

Those other two belts are held by Jose Ramirez.

But the joy at that defeat has since been overshadowed by the ongoing messy break-up from Team McGuigan.

They insist he is still “under an exclusive worldwide promotional contract with Cyclone Promotions” with Shane even tweeting a dig at Taylor writing “If you want loyalty buy a dog”.

A legal battle between the two parties is now set to follow.

Taylor admitted he hasn’t spoken to Shane McGuigan since everything erupted and only wants “what’s best for him”.

He added: “We had a great working relationship, but he [Shane] said he wouldn’t train me if I left his dad, so that’s why I am not training with him.

“It was a conflict of interests.

“We haven’t left on bad terms, it was what is best for me.”
