BOXING promoter Eddie Hearn believes Mike Tyson should only make a comeback to boxing if he engages in a professional fight instead of an exhibition bout.
The Baddest Man on the Planet, 53, spoke last month of his desire to return to the squared circle 15 years after hanging up his gloves.
Mike Tyson should only return if he competes in a professional fight, says Eddie Hearn
A trilogy clash against Evander Holyfied has been speculated, with Tyson failing to beat his American compatriot in their first two encounters in the 1990s.
And now Tyson Fury has announced he has agreed to face the former heavyweight champion, while also stating he should be allowed to return as long as he is medically fit.
He told BT Sport: “I did get a phone call with a chance to fight Mike Tyson. I was like ‘what?’
“Yeah, I had a phone call saying ‘would you like to fight Mike Tyson in an exhibition fight?’ I was like ‘hell yeah!’”
But Hearn has declared that if Tyson is serious about competing again, it should be in a “normal” fight.
HEAR ME OUT
Speaking in an Instagram live video, he said: “My] views on Mike Tyson comeback, to be honest with you, I don’t like an exhibition do you.
“What’s an exhibition, I think it’s one or the other, you either go in there and have a proper fight or you don’t at all.”
Hearn also recalled his first meeting with Tyson at a nightclub in Las Vegas, where he feared he would end up getting chinned.
He revealed: “I met him in a club once – in Vegas. We were up in this VIP bit and he was up on his own – really sad.
“He had a lot of people around but you could tell he was actually on his own.I sort of went over to him and I’m like, ‘hey, mate! How are you doing?’
“At the time I don’t even think I was promoting boxing. I was like, ‘yeah, my dad’s Barry Hearn. And he’s thinking 1) Who the f*** are you? and 2) Who’s Barry Hearn?
“So I’m like, yeah, yeah… and he’s looking at me and he put the fear of Christ in me.
“I’m looking at him and thinking, I don’t know whether this geezer is going to give me a hug or chin me now.”
