MIKE TYSON’S boxing return is “not something” Eddie Hearn wants to promote but he is still “intrigued” by the comeback fight.
The former world heavyweight, 53, is gearing up for a sensational return with plans to fight Shannon Briggs in an exhibition bout for charity later this year.
Eddie Hearn doesn’t plan to promote Mike Tyson’s comeback fight
Iron Mike has been teasing the ultimate comeback for weeks now, uploading clips of him unleashing furious power and unbelievable speed during sparring.
The footage certainly turned heads, including Hearn’s, who previously revealed Tyson’s entourage reached out to him to promote the legend’s return to the ring.
Anthony Joshua’s promoter Hearn – who staged the rematch between YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul last November – was thought to have been in ongoing talks with the heavyweight’s team about working on his remarkable comeback.
But has now told Sky Sports Tyson’s return isn’t the gig for him.
He said: “We all know my head can be turned for a few quid! You saw my KSI vs Logan Paul fight which I got stick for, but it was a roaring success and I really enjoyed it. It taught me a lot.
“Imagine if I said, ‘Mike Tyson is returning to the ring and I will promote him!’
“The stick I’d get would be unbelievable. It’s not something I’m looking to do.
“I expect him to come back in some sort of exhibition, or something like that. Is that good or enjoyable? I suppose it’s intriguing.”
Briggs, who has not officially retired from the sport despite not having a fight since 2016, says he has agreed terms on an exhibition match against his fellow Brooklyn native.
Hearn recently announced a bizarre plan to bring back boxing in the UK by hosting fights in his garden.
The Matchroom Boxing kingpin wants to stage five-bout fight nights across four consecutive Saturdays on his 15-acre piece of land in Brentwood, Essex.
With “around 80 to 90” people on site, the £1million set-up could come as soon as mid-July.
The run of shows would close in mid-August with British heavyweight Whyte taking on Povetkin in a WBC interim heavyweight title clash.
Joshua is up for it but reckons some Brit boxers are dodging the coronavirus comeback.
On Hearn’s Talk the Talk YouTube show, the promoter said: “I was speaking to AJ about it yesterday and he trained at the office quite a lot at the start of his career and he said he loved it.
“He said something to me that resonated, he said: ‘I think some people just don’t want to fight.’
“I asked him what he meant and he said: ‘I think some people talk about it but they are actually quite happy to sit out.”
Hearn is 90 per cent sure he can take over a local hotel to quarantine fighters, their teams, the Sky Sports production staff and his own employees before the action gets underway.
