Errol Spence Jr slammed American fans who support Tyson Fury over Deontay Wilder
His fan base in America was evident last February, as the MGM in Las Vegas was packed with Fury fans who watched the Gypsy King dethrone Wilder of the WBC title.
And with a third fight contracted and set for the end of the year, unified welterweight champion Spence – who travelled to England to beat Kell Brook in 2017 – urged US fans to back the Bronze Bomber.
He told Brian Custer’s Last Stand podcast: “I’m always going to root for my countryman just like they always root for their guy from the UK.
“He’s [Deontay Wilder] the hometown guy, he’s the American kid.
“That’s what I don’t like either. I don’t like how the American guys are rooting for Tyson Fury and he’s from the UK when all the UK guys are going for their guy.
“All the boxers are going for Tyson Fury and all the fans are going for Tyson Fury.
“We’ve got people here that have got split support. A lot of Americans are going for Tyson Fury. I don’t like that a lot.”
To avoid fighting behind closed doors and salvaging ticket sales, Fury could face 34-year-old Wilder outside of the US or UK, before then hoping to set up a historic undisputed title decider against Anthony Joshua.
Fury has verbally agreed to face British rival and unified champion AJ twice next year.
But the Battle of Britain relies on Fury beating Wilder again and WBA, IBF and WBO boss AJ getting past mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev.
