Dillian Whyte claims he ‘wore a 50lb costume’ for Rivas fight and laughs off Deontay Wilder’s excuses for Fury defeat

DILLIAN Whyte has claimed he once wore “a 50lb costume” before a fight as he again scoffed at Deontay Wilder’s excuses for his defeat to Tyson Fury.

Back in February Wilder was battered from pillar to post by Fury before being pulled out by his corner in the seventh round.

It saw the American suffer his first ever pro defeat as well as lose the WBC world title to the Gypsy King.

After the fight Wilder claimed his ring outfit was “too heavy for him”.

The American strolled into the ring in Las Vegas wearing an extravagant 45-pound costume that covered him from head to toe in honour of Black History Month.

The costume was made by designers Cosmo and Donato from their Los Angeles studio.

Unsurprisingly that excuse was ridiculed by many, with Whyte himself left in fits of laughter after listening to the Bronze Bomber.

Now Whyte, who had called for a fight against Wilder for years and is the current mandatory challenger for Fury’s belt, claimed he wore a heavier outfit for his July 2019 fight against Carlos Rivas.

Speaking on a DAZN and SiriusXM show, the Bodysnatcher said: “Look at it this way, man – how can he be over 200 pounds, and you’re complaining about [a heavy costume]?

“Like it’s been on record that my outfit when I went and fought Rivas, it was over 40lb.

“It was like 50 pounds or something, because it had so much Swarovskis in it. And my legs didn’t feel tired when I went to the ring.

“You know, I’ve been known to wear a few heavy costumes because they put Swarovski crystals in it, which is quite heavy. And it’s all rubbish.”

WHYTE TO GET HIS SHOT?

Whyte then highlighted how he had seen a video of Wilder saying he trains in a 50lb vest.

The Brit heavyweight added: “And there’s videos of him running on the internet in a 45-pound, 50-pound weight vest. So, he’s just talking rubbish.”

Whyte could FINALLY get his chance at the WBC strap, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

The 31-year-old has waited as the WBC’s No1 challenger for over 1,000 days but after beating Rivas last July he finally became mandatory for the belt.

Hearn told Sky Sports: “From our point of view, Dillian Whyte is mandatory, and that mandatory is supposed to land before the end of February 2021.

“We want Dillian Whyte to fight Tyson Fury as soon as possible, and if Wilder is not available for any reason then Dillian should step in and take that.”

Fury of course has agreed a two-fight deal to take on Joshua in 2021 for ‘all the belts’.
