ANTHONY JOSHUA vs Tyson Fury will NOT take place in the UK, according to the Gypsy King’s promoter Frank Warren.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed yesterday a two fight deal has been agreed and Warren confirmed the news this morning.
Tyson Fury’s fight with Anthony Joshua is very unlikely to take place in the UK
But the fight deal with Joshua is over the line
Hearn revealed progress has been made ahead of a potential all-British heavyweight unification bout in 2021, with Fury himself confirming the news.
But in a development that is sure to infuriate loyal British boxing fans, Warren all but confirmed UK based fans will have to jump on a plane if they want to see the historic bout in the flesh.
He told TalkSPORT: “The most important thing was the terms and the guys both wanted a two fight deal.
“That we got over the line and now we’re in a position where we can all move forward together to make it happen.
“I’d love it to go on in the UK, I think we’d all like that.
“But I’m being very realistic. I do think it will happen abroad.”
It was always unlikely the clash would take place in the UK as Fury does not have a British boxing licence.
The likely locations will be Saudi Arabia or Las Vegas where both men have fought most recently.
Las Vegas Raiders’ new £1.6BILLION stadium has already been mooted as a potential venue.
No broadcast deal is yet in place, with DAZN owning AJ’s US fights and ESPN having Fury.
But still keen to promote the clash, Warren said: “Both of them hold world titles.
They would have to agree to share coverage of the fights – as would BT Sport and Sky Sports in the UK.
“We had Frank Bruno fight Lennox Lewis years ago but Frank didn’t have the title then.
“These two have the titles. This is mega.
“It’s not hype as no one needs to hype this fight. But I genuinely think when this comes round it will be the biggest sporting event since England won the World Cup.
Warren’s revelation will disappoint British boxing fans hoping the mega-fight would take place on UK soil
“I’m sure on the way there will be lots of discussions to put it mildly but I’m quite sure we are all sensible enough to deal with them.”
Fury tweeted his joy at the news, saying: “It’s official FURY VS JOSUAR AGREED FOR NEXT YEAR.
“I got to smash @bronzebomber first then I’ll annihilate @anthonyfjoshua”.
Speaking about a potential showdown between Joshua and Fury, 31, Hearn told Sky Sports News: “We’re making great progress.
“There is still a lot to overcome. We are looking at venues and dates.
“We have the Dillian Whyte mandatory which is due before this fight.
“It’s fair to say [Joshua and Fury] are in agreement regarding the financial terms of the fight.”
Both men could pocket £55million each after the 50/50 purse split agreement.
