VAR slammed as Zagreb star Gojak gets away with blatant elbow on Man City’s Rodri

VAR was again slammed after Rodri was hit with a blatant elbow by Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Amer Gojak.

The 22-year-old Bosnian was being tracked by summer Manchester City signing Rodri just before half-time when he smashed the Spaniard with an elbow.

Rodri went down clutching his face but referee Carlos del Cerro Grande failed to award a foul.

Replays clearly showed the nasty elbow, yet VAR did not intervene and penalise Gojak.

BT Sport pundit and ex-Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves fumed: “What’s the point of VAR if they’re not going to give a red card there?

“It’s a red card every day. He even leaves the ball to go and elbow him.

“You don’t want to see that because if you get caught and you accidentally push someone in case you’re trying to protect yourself, but that’s a red card.”

Former City defender Joleon Lescott said: “I wouldn’t have been surprised if that was given (red card).

“It was intent there. I’d have said he’s leant across there from outside the ball’s position.”

Pep Guardiola’s men had to come from 1-0 down thanks to a Dani Olmo opener after 10 minutes.

Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus – filling in for injured Sergio Aguero – inspired the comeback with a hat-trick in 20 minutes after levelling the game on the 35th minute.

English starlet Phil Foden added a fourth six minutes from time.
