UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin has slammed VAR, calling it “a mess”.

And the president of Europe’s governing body also criticised the accuracy of the technology.

He said: “If you have a long nose you are in an offside position.

“Some referees in England don’t even check. In Italy they check for half an hour. It’s a mess.

“The players? They don’t celebrate. Now they wait first for VAR.”

He also expressed his dismay at the handball law, adding: “No one can explain what is handball and what is not.”

His blast came as Arsene Wenger said Premier League referees should be able to use pitchside monitors.

And he is calling on Prem refs’ chief Mike Riley to change his policy and allow officials to take a second look at their own decisions rather than taking their cue from the VAR booth.

Wenger, Fifa’s chief of global football development, said: “You must educate people in VAR.

If you have a long nose you are in an offside position.”

“What you want is for them to intervene at the right moment.

“The VARs are not the ones who should make the decision. They should help the referee make the right decision.”

Wenger was in Belfast at the first meeting of the law-making International FA Board.

When asked if there is a lack of consistency on VAR, he replied: “That is the most important worry.

“I feel a ref needs to have a monitor to check if he was right or wrong.

“He will gain in credibility, especially as some people in the VAR booths do not have the experience to make these kind of decisions.”

Fifa and Uefa have told officials to use monitors — but that has not happened this season in the Premier League so far.

Riley maintains that is to prevent time-wasting.

But Wenger added: “You should give the ref the possibility to do it.”

Discussions have been had over possible changes to VAR
