NORWICH were left furious by the tightest of offside calls cancelling out Teemu Pukki’s goal against Tottenham via VAR.
Saturday’s game saw a ball over the top by Mario Vrancic swept home by the Finn, who wheeled away in celebrations that were eventually cut short.
The pictures showed the tight nature of the call
The mandatory video replay check showed that Pukki was visibly level with Toby Alderweireld.
Even the intricate lines placed on the pitch by VAR officials indicated that the goal would stand.
Even with the striker seemingly in a legal position as the ball was played over, it was soon revealed that the goal was disallowed due to Pukki coming back from an offside position.
The Premier League confirmed via Twitter: “Kevin Friend has overturned the goal because Teemu Pukki was offside in the build-up.”
Norwich were 1-0 up at the time and were clearly rocked by the decision, Christian Eriksen levelling the score quickly after the half-time break.
That said, their luck quickly returned with a calamitous Serge Aurier own goal putting the Canaries back ahead at Carrow Road.
Saturday saw a number of tight VAR calls rile fans and clubs alike.
Brighton lost a potential second goal against Bournemouth when scorer Dan Burn was judged to by millimetres offside, a game they won regardless.
Yet Crystal Palace weren’t so lucky, Wilfried Zaha setting up Max Meyer for a ruled-out opener because of an offside.
That was despite replays suggesting the winger was level with his marker before Southampton claimed a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.
