Solskjaer hints Man Utd will make ‘short-term’ January signings amid speculation over Mandzukic transfer

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has revealed Manchester United are open to signing quick fix players in the upcoming January transfer window.

It comes as the Norwegian clarified comments that had suggested there could be a number of major arrivals next month.

He HAD said: ”We’re looking to strengthen in many positions. If you look at our squad compared to the others, we’re getting there but we still need two or three players to have a squad with enough numbers to rotate throughout a long season, so we’ll see what we sign”.

That led to excitement among fans that Manchester United could make a number of major signings next month.

However, Solskjaer then clarified those comments ahead of Sunday’s Everton clash but did hint at the possible arrival of quick fix options.

He said: ”I didn’t say January did I? I said going forward.

”Targets that we’re looking at, they’re long-term targets. If there’s something popping up that might be as a short-term, maybe. But we’re always thinking long-term”.

Players on United’s radar include the likes of Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho and veteran striker Mario Mandzukic.

Solskjaer is aware that in order for him to have a chance of signing Sancho, his team have to finish well in the league this campaign.

There have also been talks for a few months now over RB Slazburg’s young star, forward Erling Haaland.

The money is ever present for United, meaning no worries over spending in January for the Red Devils’ manager.

United made three signings over the summer, focusing on improving their defence which is now one of the best in the league.

Solskjaer failed to use the £74million pounds which was raised from selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan to buy a striking replacement.

That money will be kept ready for the summer window if none of Solskjaer’s long-term targets he speaks of are available next month.

Mandzukic has been on United’s radar for a while now, after a disappointing season for the 33-year-old.

The Croatian is a viable short-term option, considering Solskjaer’s priority is to sign an attacking player.

It may just be a lifeline for Mandzukic who hasn’t yet featured for Juve this season, under boss Maurizio Sarri.

Not only that, but he was also reportedly not invited to the team’s Christmas party.

The rest of the team including Cristiano Ronaldo, Gianluigi Buffon, Matthijs de Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci were all in attendance, as well as many players from the women’s team.

Instead, he has been training alone as he seeks a move away from the club.

Solskjaer will have to watch out for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund who are also interested in signing him for around £6.75m pounds.

Madzukic, who played for Bayern Munich between 2012 and 2014 and who has also been linked with a return to the Bundesliga, has a contract with Juventus until June 2021.

Manchester United sit fifth in the Premier League table having beaten Manchester City and Tottenham in their last two domestic outings.
