The Norwegian knows a good striker having been one of the best himself in his time playing for United and he spotted the talent in Greenwood straight away.

Solskjaer said: “I actually do remember when I met him for the first time because my son was training at the Cliff as an eight-year-old. Mason was seven.

“The first time I saw him he stood out and I took a picture of him and Noah together.

“I asked him because I knew he was going to be a player.

“It was a nice little memory when he signed his contract.”

Greenwood, 18, scored twice and won a penalty on Thursday night as United beat AZ Alkmaar 4-0.

He has proved to be another successful graduate from United’s much-lauded Academy.

Against Everton on Sunday it will be the 4,000th consecutive game that the club will have named an Academy graduate in their matchday squad.

Solskjaer said: “It’s something we’re proud of, it’s in our DNA. This club is built on having your own local lads or academy players coming through. We pride ourselves on that.

“The academy players know what it means.

“They’re great people, everyone that goes through this academy, and they are good players as well. They know what it takes to be a Man United player.”
