Peter Crouch spent three days in bed after being subbed by BT Sport and picked up sickness from kids leaving him mute

PETER CROUCH has revealed he spent three days in bed recovering from his illness after being forced to leave halfway through his punditry duties for BT Sport.

The 38-year-old left the studio on Tuesday during Tottenham’s Champions League clash against Olympiakos due to a sore throat which left him unable to speak.

And the ex-Spurs, Liverpool and Stoke striker has stated that he picked up the sickness from his kids, and arrived for the game feeling “under the weather”.

Despite Gary Lineker joking on air that BT sent Crouch to an “extra-long bed”, the former England international has insisted his colleagues couldn’t have been more sympathetic.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, he said: “Being substituted, unfortunately, was something I experienced quite a bit as a player but I never expected it to happen to me as a pundit.

“Tuesday night, however, saw me stake a claim to be included in the end-of-year outtakes when I had to shuffle off during BT’s Champions League coverage.

“Our kids have been ill and, kindly, they decided to share some of their snuffles with their dad.

“I arrived at BT feeling a bit under the weather but I was OK in the green room before our show started.

“Once we got into the studio, though, the unexpected happened and my voice disappeared.

“It’s not often I’m speechless but that was literally the case. Of course, my colleagues Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Glenn Hoddle couldn’t have been more sympathetic and in no way did the cruel turn of events give them any kind of amusement.

“You can guess the messages they sent me subsequently were kind and thoughtful. Upon returning home, Abbey was waiting to see if I was OK.

“You’ll be glad to know she didn’t find me having to walk off in the middle of a live TV show funny and she didn’t tell me I was a national embarrassment!

“The upshot of my substitution was three days in bed. I’ll do my best to battle on…”
