MANCHESTER UNITED No2 Mike Phelan has won the Talon d’Or for own goals on social media.
Fans swooped with criticism of United’s wideman options after Phelan tweeted a photo of himself holding a bird of prey beneath the words: “Found a flying winger”.
Old Trafford supporters quickly got in a flap, with Brazil midfielder Andreas Pereira a popular target.
Only a few fans ‘owled with laughter, while others demanded demanded: “Find a flying centre-back next” and “Great. Now find a sitting midfielder”.
Other comments included: “Sums up our scouting network” – and many supporters asked if the bird could play on the right wing.
Hawkish opponents of United’s owners also waded in, preying for changes at the top with messages like: “See if you can make the debt fly away Mike #GlazersOut.”
‘PLAY LINGARD’
But although Phelan’s joke backfired for United, it at least gave Jesse Lingard something to crow about.
England midfielder Lingard has had his wings this season, falling out of favour with both club and country.
But a few fans demanded his recall as they dug their claws into Phelan’s post.
One supporter responded to the former United anchorman’s quip: “Never thought I’d say this but Lingard deserves to play ahead of AP.”
And alongside views like “Would offer more than Peirera” was this plea: “Please stop playing AP.
“If you have any sense you’ll stop playing this guy, who loses possession 28 times and still gets to play 70 minutes!?”
But perhaps the answer for United is a flyback to the past – by re-signing Radamel Falcon.
