Man Utd to trigger Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s 12-month contract extension on £20,000-a-week in coming weeks

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to trigger Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s one-year contract extension in the coming weeks.

The Holland defender is in the final few months of his deal at Old Trafford, and can speak to European clubs in January.

He is fighting back from a horrific cruciate knee ligament injury suffered at Fulham, and should be back in the coming weeks.

And United want to keep the 21-year-old tied down with a fresh 12-months, before thrashing out new, longer terms.

It is understood he wants a pay increase on his £20,000-a-week wages, but will stick with that salary for the next year.

United would also be willing to let him leave in January on loan with assurances over his playing time.

An Old Trafford source said: “They want to box Tim off in the next couple of weeks and trigger his option.

“He’s in the final year and close to coming back from injury. Ole still believes in him and rates him a lot.

“He will give him chances in next few weeks in Europa League and Carabao Cup.

“His confidence has been quite low but the extension will certainly indicate to him that he can still have a future.”

Fosu-Mensah started his career with the Ajax before joining United’s academy in 2014.

He spent last season on loan at Fulham where he made 12 appearances, before suffering a serious knee problem.
