Martial came off with the injury after 82 minutes of the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.
The France forward pulled out of Jose Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford late on yesterday after sustaining the injury.
It is one of a series of blow which has hit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
Midfielders Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic are doubtful.
It is not known exactly what Serbian Matic’s injury is but he has now been ruled out for two months.
Paul Pogba is still not ready as he build up match fitness following his ankle injury which has left him out since September.
It has prompted Solskjaer to change his system and he is set to bring in young central defender Axel Tuanzebe in a five-man defence.
This will allow wing-backs Ashley Young and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to get further forward.
Fred is likely to partner Andreas Pereira in central midfielder for United.
Spurs boss Mourinho could keep the same side which beat Bournemouth 3-2.
That would mean Jan Vertonghen continuing at left-back.
