Jose Mourinho’s Spurs backroom team revealed including ex-University of South Wales lecturer and flop Leeds keeper

JOSE MOURINHO has radically shaken up his team of trusted backroom lieutenants after taking the Spurs job.

The Portuguese ended his 11-month spell in the managerial wilderness by replacing the axed Mauricio Pochettino.

That was surprising in itself.

But Mourinho’s appointment of key figures in the changing room – and who he hasn’t brought in – has raised some eyebrows as well.

Here, SunSport runs down who’s in and who’s out.

Joao Sacramento

New assistant manager Sacramento has joined Mourinho’s Spurs staff from Lille.

He held the same position under Christophe Galtier at the Ligue 1 side.

Sacramento, who is from Mourinho’s native Portugal, was previously a technical assistant under Leonardo Jardim at Monaco.

And his past is interesting.

He went to the University of Glamorgan (now known as University of South Wales) where he completed a degree in sports coaching and a Masters in performance coaching – as well as working as an assistant lecturer in football coaching and performance.

While there he took on the assistant’s role for the uni’s football team too.

He then became a performance analyst intern at the nation’s FA, working under the late Gary Speed and Chris Coleman, before getting his big break a year later at Monaco in April 2014.

Carlos Lalin

Lalin comes in as the fitness coach.

SunSport told you how he had a heated bust-up with Mourinho ahead of a Europa League clash in March 2017.

Mourinho and Lalin stood head to head locked in a furious shouting match at United’s Carrington training base.

Things became so heated between them that scout Ricardo Formosinho, who compiles the dossier on opponents for United, stepped in to ensure it went no further.

Lalin also worked alongside Mourinho at Chelsea and Real Madrid.

he Venezuelan studied physical education and physiotherapy in Spain before taking up a role with Deportivo La Coruna.

He spent 10 years with the La Liga club before moving to Real, where he was joined by Mourinho.

Ricardo Formosinho

The 63-year-old comes in as a Spurs scout.

Although given their frugal spending in the past few windows he may have a relatively quiet job!

Formosinho was born in Setubal, where Mourinho is from, and has had a managerial role of some capacity at a whopping 21 clubs.

He first worked with Mourinho at Porto in 2003 and teamed up with him again when the Special One was at Real.

Nuno Santos

Goalkeeping coach Santos was on the books at Leeds between 1998 and 1999 but never made an appearance.

The 46-year-old’s most recent role was in the same capacity but at Lille.

Giovanni Cerra

Cerra is joining the analysis team – three years after he was given the hairdryer treatment by Mourinho.

He was born in Rome and moved to London to complete his studies in industrial design.

After graduating, he got a job at Microsoft and volunteered for The Barbican in a series of different roles. He speaks English, Italian and French.

As analyst he turns scouting data into game plans and images that players can understand easily.

Is Rui Faria joining Mourinho’s backroom staff?

Mourinho and Faria have been almost inseparable in coaching since Jose’s early coaching days at Barcelona.

Back then, the three-time Premier League winner was serving under Louis van Gaal when his fellow countryman visited Camp Nou for a seminar.

The pair clicked immediately, with Mourinho choosing Faria to be his assistant and fitness coach in his first managerial role at Uniao Leiria.

Since then, the 44-year-old has been number two at Porto, Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Man Utd.

But since Mourinho’s sacking from the Red Devils, Faria has made his first foray into senior management with Al-Duhail in Qatar.

And they are currently going strong, sitting top of the QNB Stars League table and unbeaten after ten games.

Sacramento’s arrival has seemingly put an end to Mourinho asking Faria to join him again.
