Tottenham are 11 points adrift of the top four after dropping to 14th in the Premier League table.
They have won just three times in 12 attempts ahead of The Special One’s first game against West Ham on Saturday.
Mourinho has a tough task on his hands, but will rake in a juicy bonus if his team end this season in a Champions League spot.
The Portuguese manager has claimed the north London club can win the title next season.
Speaking about the upcoming challenge at his first press conference, he said: “I couldn’t be happier.
“In relation to the difficulty of the job ahead, every time a club changes mid-season it is because the situation is not good, that is obvious, unless something strange happened we don’t know about.
“Basically the results sometimes force these decisions.
“The potential of the club is huge.
“The potential of the players is great, I am so happy that was one of the reasons I came because of the vision that Mr Levy put in front of me about the club and the quality of the players and squad.
“I know potentially I have a great job in my hands.”
In a bid to boost his new club’s chances of finishing in the top four, Mourinho is considering a January move for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
And the ex-Chelsea chief has also set his sights on Nemanja Matic, Ruben Dias and Bruno Fernandes.
