Joe Cole hails Frank Lampard for ‘galvanising’ Chelsea and flogging David Luiz to Arsenal after Champions League triumph

FRANK LAMPARD has given Chelsea a much needed boost this season, according to former Blues midfielder Joe Cole.

Chelsea have enjoyed a good start under Lampard, sitting fourth in the league and through to the last-16 of the Champions League following last night’s 2-1 win over Lille.

Cole has been impressed with how Lampard has started despite not being able to bring players in due to a transfer ban.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: “He has galvanised the club. He hasn’t put a foot wrong since he started in management.

“People forget that Derby wasn’t an easy job.”

Cole added: “It’s great for someone so young to come in and hit the ground running the way he has.

“The confidence he exudes, that bodes well for the future. That steeliness comes through.

“Teams are a reflection of their managers and I’m sure he’ll try to get that through to his players.”

Lampard, who left Derby County for Stamford Bridge in the summer, decided to let David Luiz move to Arsenal.

And Cole believes that decision has proven to be a good one.

He said: “Allowing David Luiz to move on was a massive decision knowing he had [Fikayo] Tomori.

“He has been brilliant and you can only give him praise.”

Luiz hasn’t made the most impressive start as Arsenal continue to struggle and the transfer has gone down well with the Chelsea supporters.

The defender has been criticised for his performances so far this season and has struggled to make an impact as his new side have only won one of their last ten games.

Lampard took the Derby job in 2018 and after leading them to the Championship play-off final, was offered the chance to take over from Maurizio Sarri.

Despite a positive start to Lampard’s reign as Chelsea boss, recent form has taken a hit.

The Chelsea boss has seen his team win just two of their last six games in all competitions.

They face Bournemouth on Saturday, who are in worse form. The Cherries have lost five consecutive games, leaving them just one point above the relegation zone.
