There were never the same fireworks when they both managed in Manchester – but they will go head-to-head again now that Mourinho has taken charge at Tottenham.

Guardiola said: “I think you know him better than me, he’s had many years here.

“So welcome back, he’s an incredible manager and I’m pretty sure he’ll do a good job.”

Guardiola’s Champions League dream was ended by Mauricio Pochettino last season – as he led Spurs to the final.

So it came as a shock to see the Argentine given the boot just over seven months after that incredible night at the Etihad

He added: “I’m a little surprised, he’s done incredible, all the managers are judged on titles but it’s not the truth.

“In the time he was there the club was better.

“When any manager leaves you want the club and team to be better than the moment you took over.

“That happened at Tottenham but the decisions are made and there’s nothing else to say.”
