Gary Neville slams Man Utd’s ‘joke’ front three as Solskjaer’s side ‘lack leaders to set standard’

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville has slammed the performances of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Daniel James.

They made up the attacking trio as United were denied victory away at Sheffield United thanks to an Oli McBurnie injury-time equaliser.

Rashford did score in the game, but his performance along with that of Martial and James was described as “a joke” by Neville.

The the 85-cap England international went on to state that a lack of leaders in the squad is ramping up the pressure on boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said: “The lack of movement from Martial, Rashford and James is a joke.

“It really is an absolute joke. All game. Nothing at all from them.

“They haven’t got senior players setting the standard for them, to let them know what’s required in a football team.

“They haven’t got the leaders and the people around them to set the standard.”

Neville then hinted that some of the “dead wood” at United will need shifting as soon as possible, with reinforcements a necessity.

And he hinted that spending big in January could be the only way for Solskjaer to save his job.

He added: “When I first broke into the team I had people setting the standard and left you knowing where to go.

“Mata is on the bench, Pogba is injured, Matic is looking to get away, the experienced players at the club at this moment in time are in turmoil.

“They haven’t got futures at the club, some are injured.

“Essentially they are all out on that pitch, young, together.

NEED TO SPLASH THE CASH

“They don’t know how to approach a Premier League away game. They don’t understand how it’s different from Old Trafford.

“They haven’t got the experience or maturity.

“Solskajer has to go and spend the club’s money in January for himself, he must demand it.”

The Manchester Evening News has predicted what a post-2019 United team could look like – with some familiar names.

Leicester defender Ben Chilwell, Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, Leicester star James Maddison and RB Salzburg wonderkid Erling Braut Haaland all make the starting XI.

David De Gea, who has escaped criticism this season, keeps his place in goal.

Chilwell takes his place at left-back alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

In a 4-3-3 formation, current incumbent Scott McTominay is joined by McGinn and Maddison.
