According to the Times, the English FA has led a study into the feasibility of the bid and now await support from the governments.

If they are on board, preparation will begin into putting a plan into place for a launch in early 2022.

Matches are set to be held across Britain including Dublin, Glasgow and Cardiff with Wembley hosting the final.

But they face fierce competition including a joint bid from Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile.

Spain and Portugal are also prepared to draw up plans and Uefa have confirmed that only one European bid is likely to succeed.

England and Ireland’s biggest competition comes from China if they decide to put a bid in of their own.

Fifa are considering their rotation policy to allow China to bid for the tournament and president Gianni Infantino has already spoken of their possibility to host the World Cup.

The Times also claims that China are not yet fully on board with the idea.

England last hosted the World Cup in 1966 in which they beat West Germany in the final.
