David May ‘drank £200 bottle of champagne with tramp’ after Man Utd career ended as he drowned sorrows on 12-day bender

DAVID MAY has revealed he became depressed and went on a 12-day drinking binge after injury put an end to his Manchester United career.

The two-time Premier League winner admitted to the UTD podcast that he cried when his nine years at Old Trafford came to an end in 2003.

And May ended up sharing a £200 bottle of champagne with a tramp on a park bench in the early hours before embarking on a 12-day bender by himself at home.

The popular defender made 85 appearances for United after joining from Blackburn Rovers in 1994.

However, injuries limited him to just two winners’ medals from six title-winning Premier League campaigns.

And after the Treble success of 1999, he was sent on loan to Huddersfield to bounce back from a ruptured Achilles.

However, he tore his hamstring on his Terriers debut.

And after continuing to struggle with fitness, May was eventually released after United’s victorious 2002/03 Premier League campaign.

However, the centre-back admits he struggled to cope with his United exit, and turned to booze to ease the pain.

May said: “I remember driving out of Carrington thinking that’s it. What do I do now?

“I couldn’t take it. I just thought that’s me done.

“(Did I cry?) I did. I filled up thinking what do I do? My career is over, finished.

“I just went on a 12-day bender on my own in my apartment.

“We were celebrating (the league title win) but needed to go to bed so I got a bottle of Krug champagne and left (the party).

“This tramp was on a bench in the gardens so I walked over and started chatting. It must have been around one o’clock in the morning.

“Me and this tramp ended up drinking the bottle. I gave him the rest of the bottle and that was the start of my 12-day bender.

“(The 13th day?) I thought I can’t continue to do this. I need to get home. What I’m doing is wrong.

“That was probably the depression that I needed to get out of myself and I did that by drinking.

“I went home, went on holiday, got a call from Burnley and went there for 12 months and then retired. So there you go.”
